Recently Eastern Maine Health Systems rebranded itself to become Northern Light Health. Director/Brand & Marketing Creative Jonathan Hutter and Lead Writer/Brand & Marketing Chris Facchini of Eastern Maine Health wanted their story out there—a story of the many services, compassion, care and commitment Northern Light Health provides to Maine’s central, eastern and northern communities. They turned to a tried-and-trusted storyteller who knows and understands the landscape and the people of Maine very well—photographer Dennis Welsh.
Dennis brings an honest and authentic point of view to his body of work—just what Northern Light Health is all about and what they wanted everyone to see. Last summer Dennis started his journey from the very top of Maine over to the border of New Hampshire and pretty much everywhere in between—from the mountains to the farmlands to the coast. He created a magnificent canvas of portraits and lifestyles of real people from all walks of life: Sturdy blueberry and potato farmers in their fields under a brilliant summer sky, factory workers, a lighthearted child on a swing, couples camping and a proud barista all see the light. They are part of the Northern Light family enjoying the benefits of good healthcare.
Having filmed in Maine frequently, Dennis is familiar with his subject matter and the challenges of the locale. He knows how and when to get his shots, especially when working side by side with a video team. Since needs for each team were different, good working relationships and smooth coordination were key to a successful production.
Shooting a blueberry farmer in the early afternoon may have been ideal for video, but not the best time of day for stills. Dennis spoke with the farmer and was able to return several days later for a 4:15 a.m. shoot that went beautifully. “From my perspective, overcoming most of our challenges was about communication and the autonomy that the client gave me to accomplish what I had wanted for their campaign,” he says.
In the style of great photojournalism, every image captures the spirit of the individual without pretense and with respect and insight for the way each person lives. Compelling stories of honest, hardworking Maine locals show a new and exciting approach to healthcare and how it is changing lives for a brighter future. Northern Light is in the business of supporting people. Dennis has made them the picture of health.
