Fantastic fiction requires fantastic imagery. Harper Collins, New York had to have the best for an illustrated cover of a debut novel. The best could only mean our own BOOM CGI, the celebrated international studio for some of the most creative character design and 3D animation produced today.
The mission: Create a book cover for Anna Priemaza’s teen novel Kat and Meg Conquer the World. Priemaza is a contemporary young-adult author who dreams like a child and has written a portrait of female friendship against the backdrop of video gaming in today’s over-stimulated world of Social Media angst. Kat and Meg Conquer the World is the story of two 10th-grade girls in Alberta, Canada — one with anxiety disorder and the other with ADHD.
Each struggles with her disorder and how it impedes social relationships. Kat who is painfully shy and quiet and Meg with her off-the-wall antics are complete opposites. They are partnered in a school science project and discover they have a shared passion for "LumberLegs," a gorgeous online gaming star with millions of followers who watch him play hilarious videos. Two flawed and very funny young girls learn to support each other and overcome their weaknesses with support, courage and friendship for life.
It’s OK to be different, and what you don’t like about yourself might be exactly what someone else needs. Since the book was aimed at a young audience, the BOOM team needed to create a look that would be youthful and fun but would also feature elements of the gaming world, a big part of the storyline. “We weren't allowed to create any obvious gaming icons or characters, so we had to choose carefully how we could represent that,” says BOOM creative Alix Miller. With mindfulness to the book’s quirky characters, they created a cover that is bubbly and pops with color, energy and sweetness.
BOOM’s eye-grabbing title graphics and delightful images of swords, hearts, skateboards and bows and arrows make you want to reach out and buy the book whether you are a gamer gal or not. Harper Collins, New York is thrilled with the stunning cover art and critical claim they have garnered for this girl power story. Like our fearless characters, BOOM makes an impact and has conquered the CGI world. We, along with millions of others, are their most loyal followers.
