When advertising photographer David Westphal set out to expand his landscape portfolio with images from majestic locations, he never expected it would lead to winning several prestigious awards. His goal was to capture and elevate nature. “We lack the capacity to truly understand the intricate workings of nature, yet we attempt to control it like it was our subordinate,” says David.
He not only attained his goal of elevating and presenting a more symbiotic relationship with nature, he won a Graphis Silver Award in the Photography 2018 Annual Competitions in the landscape category with his enchanting image of Spirit Island in Lake Maligne, Jasper National Park, Canada.
Graphis is committed to presenting and promoting exceptional talent and work in design, advertising, photography and illustration. And if that were not enough, David also received a Graphis Merit Award in the architecture category with Reflections in Architecture, another stunning example of his perspective. “Not bad considering it’s the first time I ever entered anything. So I’m two for two,” says David.
Pretty amazing, but not really when you consider David is world renowned for the way he captures the sublime and makes us feel like we could live in his pictures. Now, that’s the kind of control we like.
