As Renault is shaking up the car market, Markus Esser is shaking up the photo industry with maverick branding for automotive storytelling. Markus knows cars and how they relate to our daily needs. His automotive stories present a unique branding style and image language unlike that of any other automotive lifestyle photographer working today.
With Markus's personal project for Renault Duster-Family, we get an authentic family experience —accessibility, quality time, exploration of new places and how we bond to our cars in a stunning visual package. With producer Dirk Molson, Markus shot the Renault Duster- Family in the beautiful suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, a perfect match for the Northern European look he was after.
Along with his technical expertise and keen art direction, Markus found his ideal talent for the vacationing family in seven-year-old Janka and her parents and brother. As picture perfect as this all looks and sounds, there were some clouds and not just the kind in the sky. Working with kids can be pretty tough. Kiddie moods can strike at any moment. Markus proved to be a top notch child wrangler with some quick thinking and artful direction.
The project was shot in one day. Car, lake, mountain and perfect sunset aligned to show off the trusty Renault Duster-Family in its best light. Final imagery work was done with Recom Group in Berlin. No kids were bored to tears and all trash was recycled in the making of this project. Renault Company loved these images so much, Markus was asked to shoot the 2017 campaign for their Renault-Dacia Sandero, Stepway, Logan and MCV, all viewable here.
