We're on the Road with Tom Hussey: Surfing USA
“If everybody had an ocean across the USA, then everybody’d be surfin’ like Californi-a.” Tom had an intern named Sarah who was from San Clemente, California and grew up surfing. She told him how much she missed it and Tom, ever the adventurous, decided to go with her for a weekend to that surfing area to photograph some of her surfing friends and anyone else he met along the way.
He spent four days travelling from one beach to another photographing people he met, as well as Sarah and her friends. “We met a large family who made the trek to Southern California every year for a week-long surf vacation. They would camp and ride the waves from sun up to sun down.” says Tom. Many of the images are from the family, in particular the young woman with the board on her head, the older grey-bearded man smiling at the camera and the guitar-playing young man. It was a great trip and Sarah loved that her internship with Tom got to fly her home for a long weekend doing what she loved—surfing. See more of Tom’s “Beach Boys and Gals” here and follow @tomhusseyphotography for more updates and stories. Follow us here for new work.
Welcome to the Truppe: Kevin Arnold Photography
The projects may vary, but Kevin Arnold’s focus remains the same: create alluring imagery that not only gets it right technically, but also hits you in the gut emotionally. Based in Vancouver, BC, he travels the world photographing and directing lifestyle, landscape and industrial advertising imagery for clients such as MillerCoors, Mercedes-Benz, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Arctic Cat Snowmobiles.
Before becoming a professional photographer, Kevin worked as an editor and travel writer for magazines such as Outside, Men’s Journal and Adbusters. Now living in a more visual world, he still relies on his journalistic instincts but creates the good stories with a camera.
Kevin’s toolkit—meticulous planning, attention to detail, the confidence to improvise and take risks—allows scenes to unfold naturally. Moments of discovery and spontaneity are captured in real-time action like a breath of fresh air. Inspired by his energy, we are thrilled to welcome Kevin Arnold Photography to the Truppe. We're on the Road with Tom Hussey: Cowboys Ridin' the Herd
“If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya. ” – Anonymous American Cowboy
Cattle have grazed land along the Texas coastline since 1749 when 3,000 settlers drove the first herd across the Rio Bravo. Fence lines divide the acres of open land, but time disappears watching the wranglers at work. Being one with your horse, tending the cattle, the dogs and the land is a hard way of life but satisfying. Texas cowboys are the ultimate in classic Western heroes. Cell phones may have replaced Colt 45's, but the traditions and stories of the rugged range are still timeless. See more images of Tom’s cowboys home on the range here and follow him @tomhusseypphotography for more updates and stories. Follow us on Instagram here.

We're on the Road with Tom Hussey: City on Ice at the Ice Fishing Extravaganza Tournament
(Note: Shot prior to the pandemic.)
A few years ago, Tom decided he was going to travel to shoot personal work once a month—ambitious but doable. One January, he decided to go to the world’s largest Ice Fishing Tournament — The ICE FISHING EXTRAVAGANZA at Hole in the Day Bay, on Gull Lake, just north of Brainerd, Minnesota.
He hired a local assistant, also an ice fisherman, who was a great help since he was driving a two-ton pickup truck out on to a completely frozen lake with 20,000 holes drilled into the ice. Think Swiss cheese—a nerve-racking experience. Once he reached the “City on Ice” he was amazed at the over 18,000 fishermen on the ice, ready for the minus 10-degree weather—a warmer year he was told. “Photographing the fishermen and the ice-fishing lifestyle made me truly appreciate the sport and the camaraderie of the participants,” he says. The ICE FISHING EXTRAVAGANZA is a charitable event awarding over $150,000.00 in prizes to the contestants while raising over $1 million to the area and local charities. Next tournament is January 22, 2022. See more of Tom’s Ice Fishing Imagery here and find more updates @tomhusseyphotography.

Scott Montgomery Gets Personal with "Keep It for Her”
Parenting is universal: We aspire to do everything we can right… and carry it heavy when it doesn’t work out that way.” This 22-second short is everything I love in working with kids and inspired by my daughters,” says Scott.
Production: Dad and daughter are talent, not related and just met, though you wouldn’t know it. “It helps for me working with kids to be in dad mode as much as director — to play with and surprise her. Kids on set don’t need to act, just the opportunity to be themselves through a reaction.” Scott wrote the script and recorded separately. Camera Talent: Ian Randolph and Irelynn Joy. Voice Talent: Thomas Copeland. “Keep It for Her” has also been featured on the Workbook Weekly News. See more work and follow Scott @scott_mont.

Andy Goodwin Showcases the Artisans of Wisconsin’s Driftless Region
Once upon a real time, an adventurous photographer named Andy Goodwin visited an area of SW Wisconsin known as the Driftless Area. It was called Driftless because it was untouched by glaciers, allowing the landscape to stay lush, rolling and a bit magical. The natural beauty of the region attracted a wide range of artists who live and practice their crafts to this day in rustic cottages, barns and old schools in towns with names like Spring Green, Baraboo and Mineral Point. The community creates everything from furniture and sculptures to beautiful pottery and paintings, opening its doors to the public for the Annual Art Tour where visitors can watch the creations being made.
Andy started documenting the artists at their crafts and became known to the community for his goodwill and pro-bono work which helped to promote their passions. In exchange, he received a creative shot in the arm, gratitude, new friendships, some wonderful art and the opportunity to show personal work at a local gallery.
Andy’s portraiture is like a kiss, and we all get to share in the moment and enjoy the community’s spirit.. The Moral: Great work is timeless. It reflects expert skills, a universal feel, trust in ourselves and the kindness of others to let it happen. “Driftless” is an ongoing project. Andy will be back and plans to promote the series in a gallery show, a book presentation and more multi-platform venues to spread the story across the land. See more portraits from “Driftless” here. And follow Andy @goodwinphoto.

Director/Photographer Peter Rodger Steps Up to the Challenge with HCA Healthcare Campaign
Peter Rodger thrives at being able to tell a compelling story. In a pandemic world, it has never been more important to show reality with authenticity and emotion‑‑especially for healthcare‑‑at the forefront of this global battle.
Recently, Peter was asked to collaborate on a multi-platform campaign by BPD Advertising for client HCA Healthcare. BPD wanted imagery that not only dealt with the deadly virus on the clinical side but also showed the human aspect. Peter’s award-winning cinematic style, sensitivity to his subjects and emotional impact on audiences have made him a director of choice for many BPD projects. He wanted to present the humanity and dedication of caregivers behind the HCA Healthcare mission during these challenging times—their promise of inclusion, fairness, compassion, respect for individuals and communities.
Exploring all walks of life in a thorough casting process, Peter found talent who could tell a story with their eyes and body language. Shooting in Miami, he dressed a studio in four different hospital environments as well as used several domestic locations for families and volunteer workers. Working in black and white‑‑all elements in place and scenes lit for powerful drama‑‑Peter started shooting as a photojournalist. Real moments, a glimpse of the soul behind each person’s eyes, even while wearing masks, bring the HCA Healthcare values to life: teams stepping up, the impulse always to help and never giving up.
